Making the Most Winter with Children

Family / Thursday, March 30th, 2017

Today I came across the #CountonChill video from Chill Insurance.  It got me thinking about how different our lives have been this last Winter, since we had children.  When Hubs and I were child free Winter or no Winter, we would be out!  Now that we are parents, when the chill kicks in we much prefer to stay indoors to soak up the warmth.

Staying in can be fun but it can also bring with it a little cabin fever, the same four walls can become isolating.  So throughout the cold season, I developed a few little life hacks to make the time pass with the least amount of tears and tantrums possible!  Here are my top tips to get through the colder months unscathed:

Have movie days…

Kids love movies and let’s face it, we’ve all got a Disney collection stashed away somewhere.  Get it out and educate them on all things Disney, you never know you might even enjoy it!  This year my two have become firm fans of Peter Pan and Snow White, my all time childhood favourites.

Feed their imaginations with fairy tales…

I’ve always loved reading and I really hope that my two girls develop a passion for it too.  Snuggling up to read, when it’s blowing a gale outside is the perfect Winter activity.  Children have wonderful imaginations and there’s nothing better than seeing their eyes light up at the delights of a fairy tale.  I really am so excited for the day I get to read Harry Potter to them!

Get your little Chefs in the kitchen…

One of the best things about the colder months is home cooked, Winter warming food.  I’m a big fan of our slow cooker and often have our meals simmering away throughout the day.  Meals need prepping though and there’s no reason why our little monkeys can’t muck in once in a while.  My two love helping me out in the kitchen, it makes preparing meals less like work and more like fun when everyone gets involved.

Hot chocolate, marshmallows and fluffy socks…

I don’t find dark nights much fun at all, they make the evening seem so long.  I do like to treat my girls once in a while though, so on especially long and boring Winter nights I fetch out the big guns!  Drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows on top, whilst rocking our fluffiest socks is a sure-fire way to put a smile on our faces!

With these tricks up my sleeve, Winter has been more enjoyable than a combination of wind, rain and snow would let you believe.  I’m so glad that Summer is on its way though!

  1. Winter will be here for us very soon. I definitely hibernate when it does so will remember these tips when the cabin fever strikes!

  2. As a Canadian I can totally relate! Before children Hubby and I went out all the time. After? Not so much. We tried, but it’s so much work to get them geared up and then I’m worried about them the entire time. Not to mention if a diaper needs to be changed … not fun for anyone.

  3. I used to love winter – getting cosy on the sofa or in bed with a good book, cup of tea, and plate of toast. I wouldn’t move for hours. My son is a 1.5 year old toddler, who hates to sit still now that he can walk. This winter has been stressful and draining! Hopefully next winter he will be happy to sit down and watch a film with us to pass the time, or be interested in cooking!

  4. I used to love the winter (and still kind of do) for all its romanticism – warm snuggly clothes, candles and real fires. These days it’s more snotty noses, pram coats and definitely no fire! I still love the idea of winter, but I must admit I’m really embracing the few sunny days we have had this week, just so that we could get out of the house properly! #Blogstravaganza

  5. Love it. I definitely get cabin fever, and these are some good options once he gets a little older. I already plan on getting him in the kitchen as soon as possible. #blogstravaganza

  6. I’m a big fan of movies, hot chocolate, marshmallows and fluffy socks on a cold wintery day! Although having the kids helping me in the kitchen often turns out into a disaster!! #blogstravaganza

  7. You know, we have come to love movie days so much that today, which is a beautiful day in London and my children just want to run around in the garden, I’m missing movie day! I actually want my popcorn, and I want to sit down and enjoy a movie with them!!! But I think I’m going to have to wait for rainy days for that… #Blogstravaganza

  8. We try to get out every day come rain or shine, but I confess that we definitely watch more films and drink more hot chocolate in the colder months 😉 #blogstravaganza

  9. I’m really more of a warm weather person but there are some child frienly witner activities. This winter we took Peachy for a ride on her sled. It was awesome. Still eager for the warmer days to arrive. #Blogstravaganza

  10. These are all such lovely things to do and things that I loved doing in the winter when I was little! I’m looking forward to getting out the Disney movies and making hot chocolates with squirty cream and marshmallows for Autumn when she’s bigger! #Blogstravaganza
