Life can be pretty hectic sometimes. If you are working full time, looking after your family and juggling all of your other responsibilities- chances are that keeping fit will be the last thing on your mind. Finding the time to go to the gym and exercise is nearly impossible when you have a family to look after but there are some ways to keep fit and lose weight without having to worry about dedicating too much time.
The first thing to remember is that to be healthy you don’t need to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight. It’s not practical and you won’t be able to sustain it. Start off by making small changes to your diet, for example something as simple as swapping the white bread for seeded can bring you one step closer to losing those extra pounds without sacrificing your lifestyle. If your family loves comforting classics such as cottage pie, try swapping out the potato mash for sweet potato mash; it’s a small change but can reduce your carb intake and aid digestion. It’s all about making baby steps until you are ready to take a plunge. It won’t take any extra time out of your day because you are merely swapping ingredients out.
Another great way to lose weight without even thinking about it is to eat smaller portions. This will be more economical for your family as you’ll use less food, and also will help you shed the pounds without even thinking about it. The best way to reduce your portion sizes it to buy smaller plates. You’ll be able to fit less food on the plate and you’ll feel as if you are eating the same amount because the plate is full.
Although you may believe that the easiest way to lose weight is to skip food, it won’t do your metabolism any good. Think of your body like a machine, you need to put fuel in that machine to allow it to function properly. If you don’t feed the machine, it will slow down and not be able to work as efficiently. The same applies to your stomach. Eating a protein rich breakfast in the morning is essential for a healthy body. If you don’t think you have time, make yourself a quick smoothie or go on a shake diet and reduce your consumption for a few days to shed some pounds. It will provide you with quick nourishment and allow you to carry on with your day.
Get Up And Moving
If you work at a desk job, you’ll know that it can cause back problems and make you feel achy when you do finally walk around after a long day in the office. However, you can actually add in some bursts of movement throughout your working day. If you have multiple breaks during your day, find a quiet spot and do some gentle exercise for 10 minutes. Doing this a few times a day keeps your heart pumping and will burn some extra calories. If you have a quiet room in your building that you can use, why not take a yoga mat to work and follow some YouTube videos during your lunch break? You’ll stay fit without having to use up your relaxation time at home. It will also help to clear your head for the afternoon.
Avoid Sitting Down
A sedentary lifestyle is a one way ticket to unwanted weight. There will be times in your day when you have the choice to sit down or stay moving; try and stay moving as much as possible. It allows your heart to pump, your muscles to move around and your body to burn through fat cells. If you have a choice between the stairs and a lift; take the stairs. On the phone to your friend? Walk around the house as you talk. These little things can make a huge difference to you in the long term.
Play With Your Kids
Children are like having a gym right at home, whether you are running around after them in the morning before school or trying to get them to go to sleep; kids keep you moving. At the weekend, visit the park and take the time to play with your children. You can throw a frisbee around, push them on the swing or play a game of football. All of these things keep you and your kids healthy and fit while having fun outdoors. Take a trip into the countryside and go on a hike, taking some great Instagram photos as you go. Being active doesn’t have to be a chore, and certainly doesn’t need to take up all of your time.
