How often do you walk into the house with your shopping in one hand, kids in the other and just throw your keys down? I do this a lot, which also means that I lose my keys a lot. Which then means I spend far too much time trying to find said keys, after they’ve been misplaced! There’s nothing worse than finally getting the kids ready to leave the house and then having to spend another twenty minutes trying the find my keys.

Smart Technology At Home: The Key To An Easier Life?

Smart Technology At Home: The Key To An Easier Life?

Did you know that in the UK alone, 25% of consumers own at least one smart device? Over the past ten years, smart devices have become more and more popular, and as the appeal of devices like smartphones and tablets has grown, so has the appeal of smart homes. A study recently revealed that 78% of consumers agree that smart homes are an appealing concept.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you have most probably heard of the concept of smart homes. A smart home is a property that is partially automated; this can mean that any task, from switching on the kettle or dimming the lights to changing the heating temperature or pausing the washing machine can be dealt with via a smart device from any location with internet access.

Today, more and more people are opting to create smart homes in the hope that they will make life that little bit easier and less stressful. The majority of new homes built now include some form of smart technology, whether that’s a smart oven or a smart lighting system, it doesn’t matter – the fact is that more and more homes are being built to be smart. The great news is that properties that are already built can easily be transformed into smart buildings – it just takes a few updates that’s all.

There’s no doubt about it, smart technology can be beneficial in any home, but why is that – what can it offer and who is it useful for? Is it just us parents that can benefit?

Who can benefit from smart technology – is it just families?

Smart technology can benefit every home, regardless of whether it’s a family home, a property belonging to a senior, or a couple. However, there are some situations, such as family life, where it can be more useful.

The main reason that smart technology can be so useful for families is because it can help to streamline daily life, making completing simple tasks, such as putting a load of washing on or cooling down your home, quicker and easier. It can also make caring for your children and keeping them safe simpler. From baby monitors that link to smartphones to cot mats that monitor a baby’s breathing and send an alert to a smart device if breathing should stop, there’s almost nothing that smart technology can’t do to make life for families easier.

Of course, it’s not just families who can benefit from smart homes, smart devices (and the technology behind them) can be useful for a range of living situations and scenarios. For example, for someone living with a mobility problem, assistive technology that relies on the same components and processes as smart tech, can be incredibly useful. It can make leading an independent life easier, by making running a home less stressful by taking away certain barriers.

How easy is it to create a smart home?

The answer to this depends on a range of factors, such as how smart you want your home to be. This may sound like a strange question, but it’s something to think about. For example, do you simply want to incorporate technology here and there to streamline certain areas of your home and improve safety, or do you want to create the ultimate smart home – somewhere that is as automated as possible? Obviously, what you decide to do will depend on the size of your budget, as well as on your specific needs.

Gadgets like Amazon Echo and Google Home have made the way that smart homes are run much easier because they use voice control instead of an app to organise different areas of a home’s automation. Then there’s the fact that these devices allow smart homeowners to combine all of their smart technology together, for a home that can be seamlessly run and automated. The best thing about these gadgets is that they’re not too pricey.

Smart technology can be the key to an easier life because it can make running your home much simpler. However, it’s important to determine what tech you will find useful, as there is no point investing in pieces just for the sake of it and then not utilising them. After all, smart technology doesn’t come cheap.

There’s an App for that – Apps I can’t Live Without!

There’s an App for that – Apps I can’t Live Without!

Up and down the country thousands and thousands of people use smartphones and tablets. We can’t leave the house without them and let’s be honest, functioning without them day to day has its difficulties! I for one use my phone a lot and I have my go to apps that make my life so much easier. With more than two million apps available on Android and around 2 million available on the App Store, there’s no wonder they’ve become such a big part of our lives!

This week I found out about the App Map of Britain, put together by Carphone Warehouse to give us an insight into who’s using what from the app world. Their findings proved to be an interesting read and it got me thinking about the apps I use regularly and if I fit in with the general app consensus of Britain!

Social Media

As a blogger my most tapped apps are by far the giants of social media. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are apps that I spend a lot of time on and that I definitely wouldn’t be able to live without! According to research from Carphone Warehouse, all three of these are in the top forty apps of the UK. It seems I’m not alone in my overuse of social media!

I’m also a huge user of Facebook messenger, both personally and for business. I’m pretty sure I’m active more than I’m not, making me one of the 66% that used the app back in 2016!

Lifestyle and Fitness

Now I’m a huge fitness enthusiast and I think I’ve had almost every app there is to set goals and keep track of my progress! This puts me directly in line with the gender gap in app purchases in Britain. The research from Carphone Warehouse found that 73% of women make up the users for the Calorie Counter app. Yep, that’s me! At 27, this fits right in with my age range too!

Netflix and Chill

One of my all time favourite apps is Netflix. When the kids are in bed and I’ve finished work for the day, there’s nothing better than finding a gripping series to get stuck into! Unsurprisingly Netflix is in the top 40 apps used in the UK. We all love a bit of Netflix and chill!

I like to think I go against the grain sometimes, but my app use definitely puts me in line with the rest of the UK. Head over and have a read of the App Map, find out where you fit in!

What apps can’t you live without?
