When it comes to health & fitness, the number one thing most of us are after is weight loss. Especially if you’ve given birth and feel like you’ve retained some of your pregnancy weight. No one likes feeling as though they’ve gained weight, it can be very disheartening and knock your confidence.

So, what do we do? We go online and start looking for weight loss advice to try and find ideas on how to lose those pesky pounds. There’s nothing wrong with this, in fact, it’s something you should do! The only issue is that there’s a lot of false information out there with regards to losing weight.

You Need A Special Diet To Lose Weight

Easily the biggest weight loss myth revolves around your diet. What’s the secret diet you need to follow to lose weight? Should you start a juice cleanse or only drink smoothies? Should you cut out carbs completely from your diet?? There are many fad diets that fall into this category and that people believe are the only way you’ll lose weight.

Well, this is just one giant myth. The idea that you need a special diet to lose weight is nonsense. In truth, all you need is a healthy, well balanced, diet. You don’t have to start eating crazy meals with no carbs or substitute food for smoothies. At the end of the day, it all comes down to calories. Calories are the key to losing weight; if you burn more than you consume, you’ll lose weight – it’s as simple as that. So, all you need to focus on is reducing your caloric intake, and you can start by cutting out sweets and snacks. Stop eating takeaways and fast food too, and you’ll reduce your daily calorie intake massively. As far as your meals go, you just need to cook balanced meals that are a good portion size.

If you ever visit a site that tells you to follow a special diet, just ignore it. Especially if they’re getting you to register and buy a meal plan for this diet. You don’t need to be a nutritionist to lose weight, you just have to avoid bad and unhealthy food!

Fat Loss Pills Make You Lose Weight

I think everyone is guilty of trying to look for shortcuts when we lose weight. Often, we just want something that can help give us a boost and push us in the right direction. So, we turn to fat loss pills as the almighty solution to everything.

First thing’s first, fat loss pills – or weight loss pills – are actually real. Well, they’re real in the sense that they’re a genuine form of medication you can get prescribed to your or purchased over the counter. But, the big myth is that they will help you lose weight, and this isn’t true. Instead, things like orlistat tablets, and other weight loss pills, work to prevent you from gaining weight. The science behind is is that they stop your body from storing fat, which will help you avoid gaining lots of weight. But, they don’t help you lose any weight or shed any fat that’s already in your body.

You can use these pills to stop gaining weight, but you won’t lose anything unless you put in the hard work and stick to a good nutrition plan and diet!

Being Overweight Is A Choice

There are many people out there that are often told being overweight is a choice. If you’re overweight, it’s because you let yourself get that way, right? Well, this simply isn’t true, and there are many scientific studies to debunk this myth.

To put it simply, everyone is different and has a different biological makeup. Some people are born with, or develop, biological conditions that cause them to store more fat than other people. This is how many people gain weight because their body simply works in that way and there’s not a lot they can do about it. They’ll try and exercise and eat well, but their biology prevents them from achieving their true potential and losing weight. This brings us back to some of the medication we spoke about earlier, it’s designed for people with issues inside their body that cause them to store more fat than normal.

My point is, don’t always assume you’re overweight by choice. There’s a reason that most fitness programs and gyms tell you to consult a doctor before you start exercising. It’s so you can see what’s going on with your body and if there are issues that might make you gain weight biologically – as well as checking for injuries and general health of course. Having said that, don’t use this as an excuse for being lazy. You can’t give 50% effort on your weight loss journey and then claim it’s biological!

Lifting Weights Doesn’t Help With Weight Loss

This final myth is perhaps one of the most annoying out there. So many people think that lifting weights doesn’t aid weight loss. The problem is, people just misunderstand weightlifting. Yes, cardio is the best way to burn calories and lose weight. But, adding weight training in can also provide benefits.

When you lift weights, your body naturally has to work harder because you’re adding weight to your work. So, you can start burning more calories by recruiting more muscles to work hard during one exercise. Plus, lifting weights can increase your strength and muscle endurance which means you can exercise for longer and harder, helping you burn more calories.

Lifting weights isn’t as effective at burning calories as cardio is, but it can still help with weight loss.
